Migraines are debilitating and can cause a person to lose out on days of life at a time. They are difficult to care for and even harder to cope with. Some factors that have been theorized about what may cause migraines to occur are:
- Allergic reactions
- Environmental issues
- Certain medications.
Internal factors also lend to the problem, such as a malfunction of the:
- Vascular system: A spasm of the cerebral artery can cause migraines to occur. A spasm is the result of a blood flow problem that involves the vessels that bring blood to and from the brain and body.
- Central nervous system: A depolarization of cortical neurons can create the right environment for a migraine.

Research Reveals Blood Flow Issues Lead to Migraines
Studies performed have proven that there is a link between blood flow to and from the brain and the onset of migraines. Why does blood flow become hindered? It is often due to a misalignment in the atlas or C1 vertebra. This is the top bone of the neck and, if misaligned, can reduce both cerebrospinal fluid and blood flow to and from the brain thereby leading to a migraine. What can be done to correct the problem?
How Upper Cervical Care Is Helping Migraine Sufferers in Taylor, Texas
It only takes a misalignment of ¼ of a millimeter to wreak havoc on the entire body. This is because the brainstem is located in the same area as the atlas (C1). If the brainstem is impeded in any way from doing its job, communication between the brain and body may become distorted. Migraines often ensue.
Migraine medication may be offered as a solution to the problem. However, if the underlying problem is a misalignment in the upper part of the neck, medication can only cover the pain, not get rid of it. For help in correcting the issue, one must seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. Here at Atlas Chiropractic, we use a gentle method to move the bones back into place and restore communication throughout the body. This is often all that is needed to see an improvement in migraines or possibly an elimination of them completely. See a case study here.
