No doubt about it, migraines are debilitating and very difficult to cope with. Some people experience what is referred to as aura before the onset of a headache. This can include:
- Tingling in the face and hands
- Physically feeling weak
- Temporary blindness or impairment of vision
- Flashes of light or sparkles in the visual field
No one knows exactly why migraines occur. This is also true when it comes to migraines with aura. It has not been discovered why one person experiences aura and another does not. There is some research being done that seems to indicate this can happen when certain chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine, are suddenly released.
Coping with Migraines
No matter if a person has a migraine with or without an aura, care for them is the same. Medical doctors generally suggest medication to help cope with the symptoms. Sometimes they use medication that treats seizures or high blood pressure to try to control the occurrence of migraines. Often these medications do not work, and they come with unwanted side effects. In addition, unless the underlying reason for migraines is addressed, they will probably return, and it becomes a vicious cycle.

Natural Migraine Relief
One area that has seen much success in treating migraines is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. Often migraines happen if a person has a misalignment in one of his upper neck vertebrae. This can lead to an abnormal flow of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and oxygen to and from the brain. Nerves are also affected and become inflamed.
At Atlas Chiropractic, we use a gentle procedure that does not force the spine into place, but rather helps the body to realign itself in a more natural way. The healing powers of the body can then take over and correct the damage done by the misalignment. Many have reported a decrease in migraines and migraines with aura. Some have seen their migraines go away completely.
